Training Your New Canine Friend

By Kim Beck

Making the choice to become a dog owner is a huge responsibility for both you and the dog. The dog will be dependent on you for everything; it is not a decision that should be made lightly. Once the decision has been made however one of your next responsibilities should be on proper puppy or dog training. The whole idea of training your canine friend is to prevent any problems before they start.

Training should begin as soon as you bring your puppy or dog to their new home. You will find that the actual training is not hard but it will require that you are dedicated and have patience. You will quickly discover that your new puppy or dog will wants to learn everything you want to teach them and will very eager to please their new owner.

The two most important things you will want are potty training and obedience training. Having a puppy or dog housebroken and obedient will make for a long, happy and safer member of the family. You will be able to take your dog everywhere with you and not worry about him having an accident or being wild and disobedient.

Potty training is generally done one of two ways, either paper training or crate training that have had the best results. While paper-training works well it can be a little tricky when it is time to move the paper outdoors and you are not always around when they need to go. Crate training is exactly what is sounds like, your puppy stays in his crate while you are gone and you take him outside as soon as you get home. By using the crate training method you are teaching the dog that they must wait until you get home to go outside to potty.

Obedience training is probably the most important key for communication between you and your new dog. Obedience training should begin with attending classes for beginners and moving up as both you and your puppy progress. Obedience training is also a perfect way to incorporate exercise into your puppy routine. You will end up being the proud owner of a happy, healthy, well-behaved pet and family member.

Another very important part of training your new puppy or dog is to ensure that they are properly socialized. This should begin as soon as you bring them home by taking them with you so they experience all the many different places, people and things that you experience in your daily lives. Keep in mind that puppies go through a type of socialization period themselves and it can be a very sensitive time for them. This period generally last from somewhere around 3 weeks old to about 4 months old.

Never be physically abusive to you new puppy or dog. This type of handling can damage your dog's behavior and is just not necessary. You will be hard pressed to find another animal that will be so devoted to you, or love you to the extent that your new canine will. Dogs hold not grudges, tell no lies and are faithful to a fault. All they want in life is to please you and be your best friend.
